Mike – the word secret got me here. Nice work on the details. It seems optimizing for local search is similar to SEO in general, but just another layer that needs to be done and worked on over time just to get and keep a site in the coveted top 5.

You couldn’t be more right. They do seem to be showing a lot more of the citations (even though they are still tons that aren’t being listed) and are pulling info for the “business details” from more sites as well. I think the next key is understanding weight put on different citations. I would love to see Local vs. Random vs. IYP vs. Authoritative citation ranking data. But, every industry would be different which makes this a much harder project. Thanks for your comments and for your own local search findings.
