Marketing a New Law Firm: 8 Essentials to Build Your Practice from Day One

Starting your very own law practice sounds romantic until you realize nobody hands out clients with the office keys. When you decide to open a law firm, you’re suddenly doing 100 things at once, and only one of them is actually practicing law. You’re setting up your office, choosing software, figuring out your branding, building a website, and trying to attract your first clients before you’ve even had a chance to settle in. You don’t need to do everything immediately, but you do need to focus on the right things first. Here’s the order we’d prioritize.

1. Define Your New Law Firm’s Brand Message

Before you build anything, get clear on who you are as a firm, who you want to help, and why someone should choose you over every other attorney they could call. Your brand is your “why you.” It’s the combination of your experience, approach, values, and the type of client experience you want to create.

That starts with defining your ideal client profile (ICP). Who are you best positioned to help? What specific legal problems are they facing? What questions do they have before hiring an attorney? You don’t need to box yourself into one tiny audience, especially as a new firm trying to build momentum, but having a clear picture of who you’re speaking to makes your marketing much more effective.

Once you know who you want to reach, the next step is turning that strategy into language real people understand. A prospective client usually isn’t looking for “zealous advocacy” or “experienced legal representation.” They’re looking for someone who understands their problem and can help them move forward. Your messaging should make that clear quickly and consistently across your website, directories, and marketing materials.

The homepage is where that message matters most. Your headers, service descriptions, and calls to action should immediately answer: Who do you help? What do you help them with? Why should they trust you? A strong brand message gives potential clients a reason to choose you before they ever pick up the phone.

2. Build a Trustworthy Website

Your website doesn’t need to win design awards (but it certainly can! We know a little something about that—see our portfolio for details). The main purpose of your website experience is to make it easy for prospective clients to understand your services, trust your experience, and take the next step. Your branding, from color choices and photography to video and overall design, should create a professional, cohesive experience without sacrificing usability.

Strong service pages, attorney bios, FAQs, clear calls to action, readable text, accessible color contrast, and intentional white space matter far more than flashy animations. A great website is more than easy on the eyes (though that’s certainly something to strive for). It should successfully convey your practice approach and make the right clients feel comfortable and confident contacting your law firm.

3. Claim Your Google Business Profile

For many law firms, your Google Business Profile is the first impression a potential client has before they ever visit your website. But getting set up isn’t always as simple as logging in and creating a profile or clicking “claim.” Depending on the situation and setup of your new law firm, you may need to verify ownership, resolve duplicate listings, update outdated information, or complete additional verification steps before your profile is fully claimed or active.

Once your profile is claimed and verified, it’s time to optimize. Choose the right primary and secondary categories, select relevant practice areas, complete every available field, and add real photos of your firm, attorneys, and office. A complete, accurate profile helps Google understand your firm and helps potential clients feel confident choosing you. If you want to compete for local searches, this isn’t optional.

4. Create Consistent Law Firm Citations

Legal directory citations are online listings that mention your firm’s key information, including your name, address, phone number, website, and practice areas. For law firms, these can include platforms like Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Martindale-Hubbell, and other legal directories where potential clients may research attorneys. Creating and maintaining these listings helps establish your firm’s digital footprint from the beginning.

Your new law firm’s information should be accurate and consistent across every directory and local listing. This supports local search visibility, helps potential clients find and contact you, and gives search engines more confidence that your firm is legitimate. As search continues to evolve with AI-powered results, these consistent signals also help algorithms better understand who your firm is, where you serve clients, and what you do. Building digital authority early gives your new firm a stronger foundation for long-term visibility.

5. Publish Helpful Practice Area Content

Answer the questions your prospective clients are already asking. Your website is often where potential clients go to decide whether your firm is credible, so it needs more than a homepage and a list of services. Start with strong practice area pages, FAQs, and resources that explain your services in plain language. Good content builds trust, improves visibility, and gives potential clients a reason to choose your firm over the one down the street.

Creating content is the first half of the job—distribution is the rest. You don’t need an established audience to start getting more value from what you publish. Share helpful content across your social media channels, post updates through your Google Business Profile, and repurpose website content into videos, posts, and other formats. Consistently sharing useful information helps more people discover your firm while building familiarity and trust over time.

6. Build an Intake Process That Actually Works for Clients

Marketing a new law firm isn’t just about getting people to find you. It’s about making it easy for the right people to take the next step. Before anyone calls, your website should clearly explain what you do, who you help, how to contact you, and what someone can expect when they reach out.

Make sure your contact information is accurate, your calls to action match the services you actually provide, and your messaging delivers on the promises made throughout your marketing. Once a potential client does reach out, fast responses, consistent follow-up, and a simple consultation process can make the difference between a new case and a missed opportunity. The best marketing in the world can’t overcome a confusing or frustrating intake experience.

7. Start Asking for Reviews

As a new firm, you may not have dozens of client reviews right away, but you still need ways to show potential clients that you’re credible. Peer recommendations, professional memberships, case experience, testimonials from past work (when appropriate and permitted), and other trust signals can help establish confidence while your review profile grows.

Once you begin working with clients, make requesting reviews part of your process from day one. Build review gathering into your firm’s workflow so it happens consistently, rather than trying to track people down months later. A handful of authentic reviews from real clients can do more for a new law firm’s credibility than dozens of generic marketing claims.

8. Add Paid Advertising

Once your brand, website, local presence, and client experience are in place, paid advertising can be a powerful way to get your new firm in front of potential clients quickly. Google Ads and Local Services Ads (LSAs) can help generate visibility in a competitive market, especially when you’re starting from zero and don’t yet have the organic rankings or reputation of established firms.

That said, paid advertising works best when it’s built on a strong foundation. Sending traffic to a confusing website, incomplete Google Business Profile, or slow intake process usually means paying more for fewer signed cases. Organic marketing elements like your website, local search presence, reviews, and content are what continue building your firm’s digital authority over time. Ads can help you get noticed early, but your foundation is what helps your firm stay visible long term.

The first year of marketing a new law firm is full of decisions. Don’t waste precious energy on guessing games. Focus on building a strong foundation first, then add new channels as your practice grows.
